One of the most overlooked aspects of ancient sleep is that it wasn’t performance-based.

There was no Fitbit judging your REM score. No pressure to “optimize.” People slept when they were tired, woke when they weren’t, and let life’s rhythm—not productivity apps—dictate rest.

This freedom, ironically, may have been their greatest hack.

Because stress about sleep creates a feedback loop. The more you chase it, the more it runs. But when sleep is approached with ease—not rules—it tends to arrive on its own.
